Today tourists visiting the countryside across Europe expect to have access to the internet at their fingertips. Eutelsat Business Broadband specialises in helping tourist venues deliver revenue generating, high-speed satellite broadband services to customers, wherever they are located.
Recreatiepark Slot Cranendonck is a popular campsite in Soerendonk, North Brabant, in the Netherlands, situated some 10km outside of Eindhoven. With 550 permanent and temporary spaces made up of chalets, caravans and tents the site spans 19km2 of woodland.
“Our challenge was the number of people on the campsite wishing to connect to the internet. Our telephone line service was very slow and could not meet our needs,” explained Sunder Witlox, the Park Manager.
“Today, visitors want to be able to use the internet when they are away on holiday for accessing local information and staying in touch with friends, family and, when necessary, work.”
The campsite looked at possible solutions and quickly realised that satellite broadband was the answer. They called on RIAN BV, a Eutelsat Business Broadband systems integrator, in the region.
“The campsite was a challenge because there are a lot of trees and metal roofed buildings, which can block a wi-fi signal,” said Hans Brunas, Managing Director at RIAN BV. “We carried out a site survey on the ground and used Google Earth to calculate the best possible locations to position the Eutelsat Broadband equipment.”
RIAN installed a Eutelsat Broadband professional solution incorporating four small Eutelsat satellite dishes, with modems and wireless relays to establish a wi-fi network across the campsite with access from 99% of the site. The service is delivered by Eutelsat’s KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite, which entered commercial service in May 2011. With its total capacity of more than 90 Gbps, KA-SAT ushered in a new era of competitively priced, satellite-delivered services for businesses and consumers. The satellite forms the cornerstone of a new satellite infrastructure, which includes eight main satellite gateways across Europe connected to the Internet by a fibre backbone ring.
Guests now log on to the network from anywhere in the campsite and buy an access code with use of 250Mb, 1GB or 10GB of data. Access codes are also available to buy from the front desk. The cost to the guests of 1GB of data is 12€. Once purchased, guests simply enter the code and can access the internet.
“The feedback from customers about the service has been great. It is much faster and easier for them to use,” said Sunder. “For us, the service has become a revenue generator for the business, quickly paying back its costs and providing us with a competitive advantage.” Sunder explained that he believed internet access was now a key criteria for customers when choosing which campsite to stay at.
“RIAN has provided us with excellent support throughout this process, from the initial survey through the installation and with aftercare support when needed. RIAN and Eutelsat were also very responsive and flexible to our requests, creating the data packages best suited to our customers’ needs.”
“Satellite high-speed broadband from Eutelsat has been a very good decision for us and we are now rolling out the service to our other campsites across the region.”
Satellite connectivity by Eutelsat Broadband has increased the speed of Broadband connection by leaps and bounds even in the remotest areas. Now, internet by satellite facilities helps the tourists to get access to high-speed internet always round the clock.
